Back in the Sonoran Desert at Usery Mountain Recreation Area

I am writing today from Usery Mountain Recreation Area, a Maricopa County park in the northeast corner of the valley near Apache Junction. It is so nice to feel the sunshine on my face and have a short sleeve shirt with 70 degree temperatures in the desert again.

Getting back to Phoenix from Sequim certainly was an adventure. It is amazing how a 2.5 hour flight ends up taking 48 hours. First there was the 1.5 hour from Sequim to Bainbridge Island...Then it was the 30 minute ferry ride. Due to the heavy rain in Seattle, we took a far too expensive cab ride to the International District tunnel to catch the new Sounder light rail to the airport.

Once at the airport, we cause the hotel shuttle to the hotel. In the morning, it was the shuttle back to the airport, the whole security screening, an easy and enjoyable flight to Phoenix and then off to our friend Jan's house for a day of relaxing and organizing.

This morning we collected our trailer and settled into the campground for the weak so we can organize ourselves, restock supplies, and get ready for the next leg of our journey.

We'll be spending the next two months in the desert before migrating to California to begin the 2 month trek up the Pacific Coast back to Washington.
